CONTROLLER
MAIN FUNCTION:
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Controller is accountable for the accounting operations of the company, including the maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, preparation of reports which summarize and forecast company business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses, and earnings, based on past, present, and expected operations.
The Controller recommends to the Board major economic objectives and policies for the company and provides advice on desirable operational adjustments due to legislative revisions.
The Controller is also responsible for office technology.
REPRESENTATIVES DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring and enforcing policies and procedures.
- Protects assets by establishing, monitoring and enforcing internal controls.
- Completes day to day accounting activities (reconciliations, accounts payable/receivable, agent related transactions, etc.)
- Responsible for negotiating pay plans with Real Estate Agents and ensures pay plans are reviewed regularly and are appropriate and based on organizational standards.
- Conducts regular audits; provides information to external auditors if required.
- Prepares budgets as required.
- Responsible for achieving budget objectives.
- Provides ongoing status of financial condition to the Board of Directors.
- Complies with all legislative requirements; advises the Board on needed actions.
- Ensures office equipment is operating efficiently and effective; maintains equipment inventories; evaluates new equipment and techniques (pagers, telephones, computer equipment, copying equipment, etc.).
- Responsible for managing agent passwords and accounts for websites; create/delete agent accounts.
- Manages GST numbers, file and submit monthly GST returns and payments.
- Processes payroll for direct employees; prepare payments to Independent Contractors.
- Ensures that all confidential information is maintained and stored in secure and confidential place.
- Responsible for supervising office staff as assigned; provides training and coaching; conducts regular performance reviews.
- Attends Board of Directors meetings; record minutes of meetings noting and recording all action items.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience.
- Formal accounting designation is preferable.
- Several years of progressively related experience, preferably in the Real Estate industry.
- Experience in managing employees – hiring, training, coaching, evaluating performance, handling disciplinary issues.
- Experience and/or formal training in technology.
Location: The Controller oversees the financial operations at both 1046 St. Mary’s Road and 1901 Portage Avenue, but will be situated at 1046 St. Mary’s Road.
